Underpinned by the National Curriculum our curriculum ensures that essential key skills are taught across a broad and balanced range of subjects. Additionally we feel it is important to respond to children's  interestts  and needs and so from time to time we may ‘tweak’ our provision to allow for children’s interests to feed into their learning and work.

              The curriculum is delivered through an effective combination of teacher delivery, pupil interaction, teacher led activities and pupils’ active learning. Cross curricular thematic learning is incorporated where possible to add fluidity to pupils’ learning and homework is presented at an appropriate level for each year group and consists of consolidation  and practice of classroom learning and/or opportunities for home research.

              The teaching of English and Maths basic skills is a thread throughout all subjects and classroom activities provide opportunities for the application of these skills. Active  learning and practical investigation within all subjects is encouraged wherever possible to increase pupils’ sense of awe and wonder and to promote positive  learning behaviours and responsibility for self-development.As pupils progress through Key Stage 2 the prevalence of open ended tasks will become greater in order to challenge thinking and to prepare pupils for secondary education.

        We teach reading through systematic phonics as well as a wealth of opportunities to explore a wide range of literature and develop comprehension and love of reading.  At Lyndhurst we have developed our own Phonics Scheme based on letters and sounds.           Where children have gaps in learning, staff work closely with them through additional support and interventions in order to close those gaps and improve ability and confidence for all children.

      Key Stage 2 Curriculum Overview

At Lyndhurst, we believe the curriculum should inspire curiosity and fascination about all aspects of learning and lead to the children of Lyndhurst lifting their experiences and aspirations beyond that of the local area.  We aim to prepare our children for all the challenges and that may lay ahead and equip them with the tools both social and academic to tackle these in order to improve their own lives and those of others. We aim to give them a rounded picture of the opportunities that they could take in their lives and how their learning will support them in achieving their goals

Our children and their families are the bedrock of our school’s community we aim to ensure they feel part of that community and that they take an active part in improving the lives of everybody within that community both locally and in the wider world.

We aim to do this by ensuring all aspects of the curriculum relate directly to the lives of our children and that they understand that how learning individual subjects is part of a wider bedrock of knowledge and skills which when put together benefits themselves and others.

We aim to ensure that they understand that you cannot learn on your own that you need to work together with others including their peers, teachers and all those around them and they can frequently be the inspiration for their own and others learning. They will learn that they may at times need support whilst at the same time they may need to support others. We are a learning community which thrives as one.
